Read-A-Thon 2021

November 15 – December 3, 2021

VISIT THE READ-A-THON WEBSITE

Starting on November 15th, we will be holding our second Read-A-Thon, to begin the Monday after our Author Illustrator Fair!  As we enter a season of thanksgiving and celebration, we wanted to encourage our students at Orion Alternative Mandarin Immersion to celebrate reading.  It is a school-wide event that provides family and friends with an opportunity to give directly to our school while promoting literacy and education.  Our goal is that through the encouragement and support each of our students receives from family, friends, teachers, and classmates, they will develop and foster a love of reading for many years to come.  Bonus — the money helps fund their STEAM education and other school activities as well!   We want every student to participate!  Want to know more? Help Make A Difference at Orion Alternative Mandarin Immersion School with our second Read-A-Thon!

Orion/MI School’s second Read-A-Thon will take place Monday, November 15th through Friday, December 3rd, 2021.  It will follow the Author Illustrator Fair on Saturday, November 13th.  .

Why do a Read-A-Thon?

Make Reading Fun: The Read-A-Thon helps our students to develop great reading habits, gain confidence in new reading skills, and become enthusiastic about reading and therefore learning!

Raise Funds for Our Awesome School: Last year we had a successful fundraiser with no selling involved!  Read-A-Thon funds support: STEAM curriculum, including classroom materials and learning interventions, as well as enrichment for art, P.E., and music programs; teacher classroom funds; technology; school events, and much more!

We want ALL students to read and we want ALL families to support the fundraiser.

We’re aiming for 100% participation!

How Does a Student Participate in the Read-A-Thon?

  1. Your student will get an email invitation to join the Read-A-Thon with their specific student page.  If not, email readathon@orionschool.org  for instructions to sign up.
  2. Read, Read, Read! Each day record your reading time in your Reading Log.  Make sure to log all minutes by December 3rd to be eligible for prizes!
  3. Get Donations!  To help meet PTO’s fundraising goals, we suggest each student raise at least $50!  Note: only donations received by December 3rd will count for the drawing entries (but donations will still be accepted after that date).  Donors can pledge on the READ-A-THON website, or they can donate directly to Starship Orion PTO and enter the student’s name.

**Parents, check with your employer to see if they offer a Matching Gift program if donating directly to the PTO**

Set a Daily Reading Goal and Track Reading Time

Set a Daily Reading Goal

Students should set a daily reading goal for the three-week period.  Please work with your child to set a daily reading goal that is a bit challenging, yet attainable given his or her reading level and ability.  If you have questions about what is appropriate, please contact your child’s teacher.  All time spent reading outside of school counts, whether your child is reading on their own or being read to.

Suggested reading Goal by Grade at End of Three-Week Period (recommended times)

  • Kindergarten: 6-8 hours  (10-20min per day)
  • Grades 1 – 2: 8-10 hours  (15-30min per day)
  • Grades 3 – 5: 15-25 hours  (30-60min per day)

Track Reading Time

Read! Read! Read! Students mark off how many minutes they read each day in increments on their student page in DoJiggy or on their paper tracker.  Parents and guardians may help students with this task.

Reading Strategies

Make this challenge fun for the whole family! Take a trip to the library and stock up on books that interest your child. Encourage and praise your child as they participate and engage in reading anything that is appropriate for their reading level.

For children in the lower grades, listening to adults or older siblings read counts as reading time. When reading with your child, ask recall questions about characters or details of the story in order to build his or her reading comprehension skills. Talk about the story and relate it to your child’s everyday life when possible.

For families with students in the upper grades, consider having them read in one room with others who are reading quietly — a family reading night! Or, try reading out loud as a family one night a week while rotating readers. Help strengthen your child’s reading skills by asking questions about his or her reading in terms of comprehension, recall of details, and discussing the book’s theme or ideas.

To parents, family members, and guardians, we encourage you to take the challenge of setting a goal and reading daily as well. Show your child that reading is important in your life too.  When our children see us reading, they learn the value and joy of it. Have fun reading.

Secure Donations

Secure Donations

Students should share their reading goal with family, friends and neighbors.  Each student should try to raise at least $50 or ask 10 people for donations.  Help your child contact at least 10 family members, friends, or neighbors via the student’s DoJiggy account.  Or help your child write a handwritten letter or send an email to family, friends, and your colleagues.   Donors can either do a flat donation or donations per minute read to support the reading efforts!  If donating via check/cash/PayPal, it will be easier for the sponsor to donate a flat amount rather than per minute so we can collect the lump sum at the time.

Sponsor your own child in the Read-A-Thon! You could also offer to match your child’s total collected donations or donations up to a certain amount.

Want to amplify your donation impact?  Check to see if you or your students’ sponsors can tap into their employer’s corporate matching programs!  Starship Orion PTO is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, EIN 94-3179780.  We are registered with Benevity for easy company matching.  Checks should be made payable to “Starship Orion PTO” with a note that it’s dedicated to the ead-A-Thon.

Be sure to thank your sponsors! At the end of the Read-A-Thon, consider sending a thank you note or making a video where you can share with all your sponsors your student’s final reading minutes and total donations raised!

***If you know of businesses who would be willing to donate to the Read-A-Thon, we have a business sponsorship set up for this purpose!  Please reach out to whoever you think would be interested!  They will get their business logo advertised on the Read-A-Thon webpage as well as the PTO web page!***

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the dates of the Read-A-Thon?

A: Monday, November 15th to December 3rd, 2021. Reading outside these dates is terrific, but does not count toward the Read-A-Thon.

Q: What does my child need to do to participate in the Read-A-Thon?

A: Set a daily reading goal, solicit sponsors and collect donations, read, and keep track of the time he or she spends reading.  We strongly encourage families to use DoJiggy to record reading time read and donations received.

Q: My child cannot read yet on his or her own, can my child still participate?

A: Yes! Parents, guardians, siblings and other family members may read aloud to your child. This reading time counts toward minutes read.

Q: What counts for reading?

A: ANY time your child spends reading from November 15th through December 3rd, 2021. This includes individual reading time and being read to aloud.

  • Do comic books or books on tape count? Yes. Students learn in different ways. Parents are best able to determine how their child learns and comprehends reading, whether it be through books on tape, reading aloud or other methods.
  • Can I count reading done through RAZ Kids, Epic or other online reading websites? Absolutely!

Q: Whom should my child ask to be a sponsor?

A: Sponsors can be parents, relatives, neighbors — anyone who has a connection to your child, would like to support his or her reading, and would like to support our school. This is one of our PTO’s major fundraisers where it is easy to ask extended family and friends from near and far to sponsor and donate to our school.

Q: How can sponsors donate?

A: Sponsors can donate via

  • DoJiggy(automatic collection, either flat donation or per minute donation) via credit card.
  • DoJiggy also has a check option.  If donating via check, please make it payable to Starship Orion PTO and designate that this is for the Read-A-Thon and for which student so the admins can record the donation appropriately.  Canceled checks can serve as a tax-deductible donation receipt.  *** if possible, please also pick this option on the student’s Read-A-Thon page even if paying by PayPal and then proceed to the Starship Orion PayPal link, as this will allow the website to automatically help us add the donation to the student’s total.
  • Direct donation on the Starship Orion website.  Please write a note to let us know which student the donation is for so we can ensure that it’s been properly accounted for on the student’s Read-A-Thon page

**Check donations and PayPal direct donations to Starship Orion might be eligible for corporate matching.  Dojiggy donation is not.

Q: Do sponsors have to include a tip as requested by the Dojiggy website?

A: No, this tip is to help DoJiggy run their platform and is completely voluntary.  This will be on top to the amount that they are donating to the student and is NOT required.

Q: How much money should a sponsor donate?

A: That is up to the sponsor. Donations can be flat amounts, or they can be based on time spent reading (i.e. a student’s reading goal is 400 min, so a pledge can be $x for every minute read).  If donating via methods other than on the DoJiggy website (which automatically helps calculate total amount based on per minute read at the end of the Read-A-Thon), it might be easier to do a flat donation.

Q: Can sponsors donate to the whole class?

A: Yes!  Just go to the classes page, choose the class you want to donate to, and voila!  One can even just donate to the whole school!

Q: Who is responsible for collecting the sponsorship donations?

A: If the donors pledge on the Dojiggy website, it is automatically collected.  Otherwise, checks and electronic payments are collected by the PTO Treasurer.

Q: Are there prizes for the students?

A: Yes.  There will be prizes for top readers, top donors, top classes, as well as if we reach our goal!

Q: Can my child participate – even without sponsors?

A: Yes, all students are encouraged to participate regardless of the amount of sponsorship donations. Have your student track in the DoJiggy student webpage so he or she can be eligible for prizes for minutes read.  The more you read, the more you can succeed. EVERYONE wins when we read.

Q: Is there a “template” request for donations that I can send to family and friends?

A: Yes. You can see the pledge request write-up on DoJiggy, and donation requests will be sent out automatically.  You may also want to directly send an email to make it more personal, as well as share your student’s donation page on other social media platforms and via text to reach family and friends whose email addresses you don’t have.

If you’d like to send supplementary requests, below is a message we’ve drafted, but please edit to make it your own! You can send this out in an email to friends and family or post on social media.

Hello Family and Friends!

It’s Read-A-Thon time of the year for [CHILD NAME] at Orion Alternative Mandarin Immersion School! [CHILD NAME] has been reading up a storm since the Read-A-Thon started! [CHILD NAME] has set a reading goal of [XX] hours over the course of the three-week Read-A-Thon. This fun event is an Orion MI PTO student-led fundraiser, so it’s a great way for the kids to raise money for the school they love while discovering new books, giving book recommendations to their friends, and starting the winter season off with a smile.

If you would consider donating to [CHILD NAME]’s Read-A-Thon, I know [CHILD NAME] would greatly appreciate it — as would the school!  Please either go to the Starship Orion’s Read-A-Thon webpage or [CHILD NAME]’s personal Read-A-Thon page by Friday December 3rd, 2021.  No donation is too large or too small.  All donations are tax deductible.

All Read-A-Thon donations will go directly to the Starship Orion PTO, which provides funding for programming the whole community deems essential for creating well-rounded students — STEM-specific enrichment first and foremost, but also art and garden classes, additions and improvements to the library, field trips, assemblies, technology purchases, staff training, and more.

Thank you so much for considering donating — and Happy Reading!
