Committees

Starship is composed of multiple committees run by dedicated parent volunteers. We encourage Orion families to take part in committees that take advantage of their interests and talents, whether as a leader or a contributor. Many committees are started by parents who see a need in our community and have the skills, time, and motivation to fill that need. If you are interested in starting a new committee, feel free to propose it at a monthly Starship meeting. Auction

The Orion Auction is an annual fundraising party. Held in the spring of each school year, the Auction is Orion’s primary fundraiser; raising money to provide Orion students and teachers with everything they need to promote successful learning. A large event, and critical to Orion’s funding, we require a lot of volunteers to make the Auction happen. Planning starts months in advance of the event and there are a variety of roles to fill including: finding item donations, securing underwriters/sponsorship, decorating the venue, finding a caterer and entertainment, etc. We consistently raise approximately $50,000 in sponsorship and donations! Author-Illustrator Fair

The Author & Illustrator Fair committee puts on an annual community event with selected published children’s authors and illustrators in order to engage with students, parents, librarians, and other visitors in their art of writing and illustrating.  The event is free and open to the public. Books are available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds going to Orion School. The event requires numerous volunteers working various jobs, including classroom liaisons, marketing and public relations, book pre-order lead, A/V manager, and many others.  authorillustrator@orionschool.org

Classroom Support

The Classroom Support Committee is comprised of the Room Coordinators from each class. We work together to support teachers and recruit volunteers for classroom activities (such as centers and field trips). Our team of room coordinators also helps with planning events that span multiple classrooms such as multicultural studies, teacher appreciation week, and teacher snacks and lunches during conferences. Another purpose of this committee is to support the parent participation system. We coach and encourage families to complete and report their hours.  roomsupport@orionschool.org

Library

The library committee is a team that supports the librarian and helps to foster a safe place and community for Orion students. We currently host an annual Scholastic book fair (in the Fall) to raise funds for new books and library materials. We also volunteer for library clean-up days, shelving books, repairing books, and for classroom library times. library@orionschool.org

Orion Bridges

Orion Bridges is a volunteer designed, run, and administered in-class program that enhances and supports Orion’s culture of caring, kindness, and social responsibility. Committee members meet monthly to create lesson content and provide training for parent volunteers, who lead monthly 30-60 minute lessons in your child’s classroom. Each lesson draws on: carefully selected readings or videos that trigger deep reflection and discussion; mindfulness practices; artwork; and physical activities. The lessons are designed to help students: feel valued, respected, and known at school; build crucial emotional intelligence and relationship skills; develop greater awareness, respect and positive regard for themselves and others; and develop a sense of awareness and responsibility for their community (both in and out of school).  OrionBridges@orionschool.org

Secretary

The role of the Starship secretary has two components – Record Keeping and Communications. The record keeping component focuses on compiling, organizing and sharing meeting minutes and agendas while the communications component focuses on getting out the news of the PTO and encouraging the Orion School community to attend meetings. secretary@orionschool.org

Tours

Tours at Orion are a requirement for enrollment. Current parents conduct the tours so as to give potential Orion families a first-hand account of our culture and commmunity. Tours occur primarily in the fall before School-of-Choice applications are due, start at 8:30 a.m., and last approximately one hour. Participants are given a general overview of Orion, a view into the classrooms, and a Q&A session with Principal Julie. For information on volunteering for tours contact, tours@orionschool.org

Web Team

The Web team is responsible for the Starship website and social media presence, as well as maintenance of the PTO email distribution list and document sharing portal (Google Drive). Our goal is to find solutions that streamline and automate processes and communications for our school community. webmaster@orionschool.org

Wellness

The Wellness Committee is focused on educating our children about how to make smart choices to take good care of their bodies. We do this via annual activities that culminate in celebrating National Nutrition Month throughout March and a fun-filled Wellness Day in May. Activities focus on encouraging healthy food and drink choices and getting adequate physical activity. wellness@orionschool.org
